How a Bingham County septic system is supposed to work
A standard system is not a hole that “goes away.” It is a two-stage plant: a watertight tank that separates solids, and a drainfield that finishes treatment in unsaturated soil. Idaho writes that sequence into IDAPA 58.01.03 and the Technical Guidance Manual. Local soils, canals, and frost decide whether a standard system is even legal on your lot.
Inside the tank
Wastewater from toilets, sinks, laundry, and showers slows down in the tank. Heavier solids settle as sludge. Fats and grease float as scum. The clearer liquid in the middle—effluent—leaves through a submerged outlet baffle or sanitary tee. Idaho requires that outlet device to reach a depth where about 40% of the tank’s liquid volume sits above the bottom of the tee or baffle. If the baffle is missing, cracked, or installed backwards, solids ride out into the drainfield. That is how a $400 pump-out turns into a failed lateral field.
DEQ’s pumpers’ guidance (August 2025) is blunt: the tank works until sludge fills more than 40% of the volume measured to the outlet invert, or scum reaches the top of a baffle. After that, the drainfield is next.
Minimum tank size for a dwelling in Idaho is 1,000 gallons, plus 250 gallons for each bedroom over four. New tanks must be watertight. Manholes must come to finished grade. Those details are in IDAPA 58.01.03.007, not in a Facebook ad.
The drainfield is the treatment plant
Effluent is not “clean water.” Soil organisms and unsaturated soil finish the job. Idaho groups soils into design groups A, B, and C and refuses gravel, coarse sand, heavy clays, muck, and hardpan for a standard system. Application rates in the rule are 1.0, 0.5, and 0.2 gallons per square foot per day for groups A, B, and C. The lot must also hold a full replacement drainfield sized for 100% of design flow. That replacement area is not a suggestion; it is how you still have a legal repair when the first field clogs twenty years from now.
Effective soil below the trench bottom must reach the depths in the rule: for example, 6 / 4 / 3 feet to normal high groundwater for groups A / B / C, and 1 foot to seasonal high groundwater in all groups. Properties near the Snake River, irrigation laterals, and shallow basalt often fail those tests. That is when SIPH and DEQ start talking about alternative systems, not “a longer leach line.”
Setbacks that show up on every SIPH plot plan
SIPH’s plot-plan checklist repeats the distances homeowners forget when they sketch a tank “over by the well”:
- 50 feet from a private well to the tank; 100 feet from any well to the drainfield and replacement area
- 5 feet from the dwelling to the tank; 10 feet from a crawlspace or slab to the drainfield; 20 feet from a basement
- 50 feet from ditches and canals to the drainfield
- 5 feet from property lines
IDAPA tables are more detailed (public-water wells, surface water by soil type, downslope cuts). If your sketch and the rule disagree, the rule wins. Neighboring wells count. Flood-irrigated ground must be shown because extra water in the soil is extra hydraulic load on the field.
What “standard” does not include
Pumps, pressure distribution, sand mounds, extended treatment package systems, and systems over 2,500 gallons per day are not backyard gravity systems. They need complex installers, and some need engineers and DEQ review. See alternative systems before you assume a cheap gravity field will stamp.
