Why Bingham County is not a generic septic brochure

Statewide rules assume someone looked at the hole in your yard. Around Blackfoot that hole often shows irrigation-influenced groundwater, basalt, canals within a stone’s throw, and frost that heaves poorly buried lids. This page is the local context; it is not a soil survey for your tax parcel.

Soil is a permit input, not a personality trait

NRCS soil surveys and the 1973 Bingham Area Soil Survey describe a patchwork of loams, sands, and clay-influenced units across the Snake River Plain and the foothills. Idaho then maps those textures into design groups A, B, and C—or into “unsuitable.” Coarse sands and gravels can be too fast (poor treatment). Clays, mucks, and hardpans can be too slow. SIPH’s test holes, 8–10 feet deep, are how the district decides which sentence applies to your drainfield.

Do not cite a neighbor’s system as proof. A field that worked on a deep silt loam will not stamp on shallow basalt 200 yards away.

Groundwater moves with the irrigation season

USGS Water-Resources Investigations Report 87-4150, on persistent groundwater issues near Groveland-Collins, found that infiltration of irrigation water is a major recharge source and that water levels may fluctuate 15 feet or more during the irrigation season. Localized basalt ridges can pond water. That is hydrology, not folklore. For a drainfield it means:

If a nutrient-pathogen evaluation is required—shallow groundwater, coarse soils, existing contamination—that is DEQ’s groundwater rule talking, not a contractor upsell.

Canals, ditches, and the Snake River

SIPH wants 50 feet from ditches and canals to the drainfield, and it wants surface water within 300 feet of the property lines drawn on the plot plan. The Snake River, Blackfoot River, and the irrigation network are not decorative. Flood irrigation on or next to a field is extra clean water competing with effluent for the same pore space. Mark it on the plan. Do not hide it.

Frost, lids, and pipes

Idaho requires watertight tanks that can handle frost damage. Buried lids without risers get lost under January snow, then get crushed by a pickup looking for traction. Frozen roof vents, which EPA flags nationally, are common in long cold spells; they cause odors that scare people into dumping chemicals. Find the lids in September. Keep the field uncompacted when you pile snow. Heat tape is not a substitute for a legal isolation distance to groundwater.
